Celebrating World Menopause Day

Celebrating World Menopause Day

Every year on October 18th, we observe World Menopause Day to raise awareness about menopause and the support options available for improving health and well-being during this significant life stage1. In a DHSC survey in 2021, only 1 in 3 respondents felt comfortable talking about health issues to their workplace so, this day is also a chance to educate, support, and empower women experiencing menopause.  It is also an opportunity for employers to remove barriers and stigma around women’s health and increase engagement and retention with key parts of their workforce.

What is Menopause?

Menopause marks the end of a woman’s menstrual cycles, typically occurring between the ages of 45 and 55. It is diagnosed after 12 months without a menstrual period. Menopause is a natural biological process, but it can bring about various physical and emotional changes due to fluctuating hormone levels.

Why Menopause Awareness Matters For Employers

  1. Legal Compliance: In the UK, employers have a legal obligation to support employees experiencing menopause. This includes making reasonable adjustments to the workplace to accommodate their needs.
  2. Reducing Legal Risks: By providing proper support for staff affected by menopause, employers can reduce the risk of legal issues related to discrimination and workplace accommodations.
  3. Improving Staff Retention: Supportive workplace policies can help retain valuable employees who might otherwise leave due to menopause-related challenges.
  4. Enhancing Productivity: Addressing menopause-related issues can reduce absenteeism and improve overall productivity. Employees who feel supported are more likely to perform well and stay engaged.
  5. Promoting Gender Equality: Supporting menopausal employees helps promote gender equality, particularly in senior roles where women may face additional challenges during menopause.
  6. Boosting Morale and Well-being: A supportive environment can significantly improve the morale and well-being of employees, leading to a more positive and inclusive workplace culture.

How to Observe World Menopause Day

  • Education: Provide and share information about the menopause in your workplace. Knowledge is power, and understanding menopause can help reduce misconceptions and stigma.
  • Support Menopausal Women: Ensure support services are in place for employees experiencing menopause and use October 18th as an opportunity to reshare these resources.
  • Promote Workplace Awareness: Encourage your teams and leaders to recognize and support menopausal employees. This can include providing resources, flexible working arrangements, and creating a supportive environment.
  • Events: Organize events that promote menopause awareness. This could be a speaker, a health fair, or a social media campaign.

Conclusion

World Menopause Day is a vital initiative to ensure that women receive the support and information they need during menopause but, should be used as part of a wider employer initiative to reinforce a broader program of employer support and understanding.  By raising awareness, promoting education and providing resources in the workplace for menopause sufferers, we can create more successful and inclusive spaces and help women navigate this life stage with confidence and health.
